Daniil Kvyat may have recorded his best result of the season at Imola but it was too little too late to save his seat says Helmut Marko.
With his team-mate Pierre Gasly one of the stars in this year’s championship, Kvyat has been left out of the headlines and, it seems, out of AlphaTauri.
Gasly, who won this year’s Italian Grand Prix, has scored 63 with Kvyat, after his P4 at Imola, on 26.
While the team has confirmed the Frenchman for next season, Marko made it known last week that the second seat would not be Kvyat’s.
Instead AlphaTauri is considering putting Honda protege and Formula 2 driver Yuki Tsunoda in the AT02.
“For the strategy we have I need a very strong driver [in Gasly], especially if Tsunoda is a rookie in the car next year,” said the Red Bull advisor.
Kvyat, who started his F1 career with the junior team before being promoted to Red Bull then demoted to the junior team then dropped altogether only to be re-signed after a year as Ferrari’s reserved driver, responded with a P4 at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
It was the 26-year-old’s best result of this championship.
It, however, won’t be enough to save his seat.
Asked if Kvyat had won back his seat on Sunday, Marko replied with a laugh: “No.
“It was a good performance but it will help him in the future or to position himself in the future…”
Helmut Marko: “Congratulations!”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Marko made it clear that Sunday’s race won’t impact AlphaTauri’s 2021 plans.
“Nothing changes in the plans for 2021,” he said.
Should Kvyat lose his seat, as its looks likely, his options for a 2021 Formula 1 drive are limited with only Mercedes, Red Bull and Haas yet to confirm their line ups with Haas the only realistic option.
The Mercedes seat is expected to go to Lewis Hamilton and if Red Bull don’t want Kvyat at AlphaTauri, they definitely don’t want him back at Red Bull.
Haas, though, are believed to be days away from confirming Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin for next year’s championship.
