Ricciardo truly believes in post-race message to Renault

Daniel Ricciardo has explained his post-race radio message to the Renault team following the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

2019 represented a backward step for Renault, who failed to defend their ‘best of the rest’ crown in the Constructors’ Championship and lost it to their customer team in McLaren.

After the chequered flag waved for the final time in 2019 at the Yas Marina circuit, Riccardo sent some words of encouragement back to the team.

“Thank you, guys. I really mean it but we will get better next year, a lot better, I really think we will,” Ricciardo initially said on team radio.

“So let’s get it.”

Ricciardo has since revealed that he was not just saying those encouraging words for the sake of it and truly believes we will see an improved Renault in 2020.

“Putting it bluntly I’m not really a speechmaker,” Ricciardo told Autosport.

“I know I like to talk a lot, but I’m not going to say, ‘we’ll do better next year boys’ if I really don’t think we will. I’m not just going to massage their shoulders and tell them what they want to hear.

“Even in myself I know I’ll get better, so that’s one variable that I know is going to change for the better. So even that alone will improve.”

There is a widespread understanding at Renault that the main focus on their 2020 challenger must be on the aerodynamic side and Ricciardo conceded that the team probably went down the wrong path in 2019.

He added: “Speaking with the aero guys, the philosophy of how we’ve designed the car, and especially the front of the car this year, I think they’re pretty confident that that was maybe not the best way to go, looking at some other teams, in order to develop the car.

“We can change that, and get a little more out of it as the year goes on with updates. We didn’t really get that much [this year].

“So, yeah, I think we have a bit in hand and we certainly have the resources and the budget to do so. So, yeah, it’s optimism.”
