Villeneuve: Hamilton to join Ferrari

Former Formula 1 driver and Champion of 1997, Jacques Villeneuve, believes that Lewis Hamilton will only become a true legend the day he succeeds in breaking Michael Schumacher’s record of seven F1 titles.

Although regularly debunked and often by Hamilton himself, for many people (including Eddie Jordan – Read Here), the British driver is likely to be joining Scuderia Ferrari from 2021 onwards.

For Jacques Villeneuve, Lewis Hamilton could become a true legend by breaking Michael Schumacher’s record by driving a Ferrari, which would be “the icing on the cake” according to the Canadian. Indeed, off the record, the Candian concurs with Eddie Jordan claiming that he too understands it’s very likely to happen.

“Lewis[Hamilton] is looking to break all Michael Schumacher’s records and I think a place at Ferrari would be the icing on the cake. ” explains Jacques Villeneuve.

“With a seventh title, he could not only reach Schumacher’s level, but also drive for Ferrari to become a complete legend.”

The 2020 season will be the last year of his contract with the Mercedes team, the Briton will then be able to choose to join another team if he so wishes.

At Mercedes, the team’s executive director, Toto Wolff, has already indicated that if Hamilton wanted to leave the team at the end of next year, he would not hesitate to look at all the opportunities in the driver market to replace Lewis.

“We hope to have the two most competitive Formula 1 drivers and Hamilton is our priority today. “said Wolff.

“But we also need to look at the driver market and there are other drivers that I like.”

“I think it’s normal for drivers to dream about Ferrari, it’s the most important brand in Formula 1. Red is like the sun in F1, but Hamilton doesn’t need sun, he just needs to win.” he concludes rather pragmatically.
