Nico Rosberg says his fellow German Nico Hulkenberg ought to be a contender for the Red Bull seat alongside Max Verstappen in 2020.
Albon possesses the seat currently, having replaced Gasly mid-season, and showed his first signs of weakness in Russia as he crashed in qualifying after struggling to match Verstappen’s pace through the weekend.
Red Bull have previously ruled Hulkenberg out of contention, but the experienced German could bring calm to a seat that has been prone to chaos and is freely available, with Esteban Ocon set ot replace hm at Renault next year.
“Albon is fighting for his seat at Red Bull, which is not easy,” Rosberg said on his YouTube channel, before the Thai driver’s fightback to fifth in the Sochi race.
“I think Red Bull is a bit stuck there as to which driver they are going to take.
“Gasly probably has the lead at the moment because he is driving so well with the Toro Rosso, he is going a good job there, so probably at the moment at the forefront.
“Who else do they take? No idea… Hulkenberg wouldn’t be a bad choice to be honest.
“He still has the opportunity for Red Bull even though they said no. He fits very well with the mentality and is a good driver so why not?
“At the moment he is the best choice.”
Gasly was dropped after 12 races in which he finished behind Verstappen each time and failed to get on the podium, while Albon has secured top-six finishes in all four of his Red Bull races so far.
