Ricciardo cops grid penalty for new turbo

Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo will drop five places from his qualifying place for Sunday’s Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix after taking a new turbocharger.

The team reported the Australian’s Renault engine picked up damage to the turbo following his retirement from the Mexican Grand Prix.

Ricciardo has taken grid penalties on seven occasions in 2018, and has used six turbochargers in the 19 events thus far.

Following the Mexican Grand Prix Ricciardo suggested his car was cursed after he was forced out while in contention for a podium result.

It was his eighth retirement of the season and second in as many events.

In the 11 events since the Austrian Grand Prix Ricciardo has seen the flag on just five occasions, and has not stood on the podium since winning in Monaco.

Ricciardo ended opening practice fourth fastest in Interlagos, just under four tenths adrift of pace-setting team-mate Max Verstappen.
