Lewis Hamilton may be “extremely good” but Max Verstappen reckons any top driver could win a championship in the Mercedes F1 car.
Hamilton raced to his fourth championship in five years on Sunday as he finished fourth in the Mexican GP, a race won by Verstappen.
In doing so the Brit took the title ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari as the German cannot catch him in the final two races.
Sunday’s championship success was Mercedes’ fifth in five seasons with the Brackley squad also on course to win the Constructors’ title.
Asked by Blick newspaper, what made Hamilton so good, Verstappen replied: “His car!”
The 21-year-old added: “Of course he is extremely good.
“But Vettel could win with his car, Ricciardo could win with his car – I could win with his car.”
Hamilton, 33, is now a five-time World Champion with the record still belonging to Michael Schumacher, who won seven championships.
Verstappen hopes to have start his run of championships as soon as the sport’s new rules come into effect in 20121.
“Then I’m 23. And I still have six, seven years to win World titles,” he said. “I hope I’m a four-times World Champion by then. That would be great.”
