Helmut Marko says he’s “upset” by the mistakes that Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari have made in this year’s title race as it is now “hard” for them to win.
With Mercedes having won the last four championship doubles, it seems Ferrari weren’t the only team hoping to see them beaten this season.
That, though, looks unlikely to happen.
Although Vettel and Ferrari led the way in the first half of the campaign, Mercedes have come to the fore since the summer break while Ferrari’s efforts have been blighted by mistakes.
As such Hamilton could wrap up the title next time out in Austin.
Marko admits he’s “upset” by Vettel’s mistakes but feels the blame also belongs with Ferrari who not only made mistakes but also didn’t play the team game when they had the chance to.
“I considered Vettel to be the favourite for the title, but he made a lot of mistakes which upsets me,” the Red Bull advisor told Austria’s Laola1.
“But I’m also surprised by some of what Ferrari did.
“When you see that Mercedes now rely on Hamilton, then why not swap around Kimi and Sebastian, as could have been done in Austria?
“Or why in qualifying did they not put Kimi on the track before Vettel, as could have been done in Monza?
“Now, Vettel no longer has the right to make mistakes. But even if he doesn’t make any, it will be hard for him to win the title.”
