Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix in a rain hit qualifying session. Valtteri Bottas was second fastest, ahead of Max Verstappen. Title contenders Ferrari and Vettel made mistakes at critical moments, resulted him 9th on the grid.
Hamilton secure his pole position in the first attempt of the final qualifying Q3 while Ferrari missed a chance to run in the dry as a result of team and driver mistakes.
The Italian outfit wrongly sent the drivers out on intermediate tyres in the dry at the start, and Vettel unsuccessful to get in a time after swapping to dry-weather ‘slick’ tyres. By the time of the final attempt, it was already raining hard so no-one improved… more to follow
