Just like the Formula 1 cars themselves, the steering wheels have gone through a major transformation since the very beginning.
This fascinating video goes through the evolution of F1 steering wheels, from Sir Stirling Moss’s super-simple wood and aluminium wheel from 1957 to a modern-day design from 2014.
It’s a pretty impressive leap from the standard circular wheel with no thrills, to the hugely complicated, button and switch-filled wheels of current F1.
But that follows the evolution pattern of F1 as a whole anyway, where the cars have gone from simple aero and big engines to complicated wings and hybrid power units. Absolutely mind-blowing.
