Fernando Alonso would be surprised if McLaren does not have the pace to make the top ten in qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix.
McLaren is bringing a series of updates to its car this weekend and is also expecting the MP4-31 to be better suited to the Circuit de Catalunya than it has been to recent tracks. Alonso is so confident in the car that he believes a top six position could be possible on Saturday.
“Q3 is the new target for Saturday, we have never been in Q3 with this new McLaren-Honda project so I think finally it will be this time we can get this position and then Sunday points,” he said. “I will be very surprised if we are not in the top 10 and our aim is to be even higher than this, maybe top five or top six.”
Alonso scored his first points of the season in Russia and says that should be the target at all races from now on.
“I think the car is improving and we are getting more and more competitive in the races. I think the next grand prix will be a good one for us, so here in Barcelona, Monaco, even Canada should be a little bit better than what we did in China and in Russia in terms of layout.
“We have some high hopes for us at the moment to keep this momentum and keep growing together to more competitive positions. We have some updates for this race in terms of aerodynamics, something on the front wing, rear wing, the floor. Something that we need to test tomorrow. Sometimes they deliver as we expect, sometimes a little bit less, sometimes even more so hopefully tomorrow will be a surprise. Points from now on should be the target.”
